There’s nothing that gets me more excited for the holidays than a little seasonal decorating around the house. But to avoid the insanity of tackling every holiday project known to man, I’m keeping it simple with just a few winter-inspired elements.

Starting with the tree trimmings! When it comes to winter and/or holiday decorating, tree trimmings are truly your best friend. You can use them for nearly any project you can dream up - from wreaths and garlands to vase fillers and homemade potpourri.

But the best thing about this versatile decor item? The price, or rather, lack thereof. You can get tree trimmings for free, from nearly anywhere Christmas trees are sold (Home Depot, Lowe's, Christmas tree lots, etc). See? They really are your best friend this time of year!

So what do you do with this budget-friendly material once you get your hands on it?

My first pick for minimal(ish) decorating has to be a holiday wreath! There are so many ways you can make a wreath (and a plenty of beautiful pre-made options too). So, you’re bound to find something that works with your style.

Currently, my preference for wreaths is go big or go home, especially if you’re hoping to make a statement. A big wreath can become the focal point in a room, especially on a blank wall. For example, something like this DIY wreath is pretty memorable at over three feet tall. The size makes it a solid replacement for artwork during the winter months, and the unique triangle shape and fresh greenery add that extra special touch. Faux greenery and faux florals are a good option too, if you hope to reuse your creation year after year.

Tight on space? Opt for a smaller wreath, like this asymmetrical Christmas wreath with fresh berries and blooms.

Another good spot for a holiday statement is a staircase. If you have a two-story home, your staircase is the perfect place for holiday decorating. Add a fresh garland sprinkled with DIY ornaments or add a bit more magic, with string lights and stockings.

No staircase in your home? Go for the mantle! No mantle? Add a large branch foraged from outside to a blank wall and hang stockings, ornaments, or holiday cards from the branch using S hooks or string. Or as another idea, stick smaller tree branches into a large heavy vase and hang ornaments from the branches for a festive accent in your entryway or dining table.

And last but not least, if all else fails, bring in the string lights. Draping twinkle lights or regular string lights down a staircase, around a doorway, windows, bookshelves, you name it, will get your home into the holiday spirit in no time.
