Read on below to learn more about Candice, her artistic process, and the advice she has for other mamas who are looking to pursue their passions—whatever they may be! Q: Tell us about you! A: I was born and raised in Oakland, Ca in a family of 6. I was always a creative child and my first love of art was drawing. From there I played the piano, the flute, danced and even sang in the Gospel Choir. I attended Howard University where I received a Bachelors in Marketing. I worked in corporate American for 7 years and wasn't happy there, so I quit my job in pursuit of something different in New York. Shortly after moving to Brooklyn, I started CanDid Art in 2011 after learning how to make jewelry via YouTube. With little knowledge of the fashion industry, I hit the ground running by attending trade shows and events which eventually led to my jewelry being carried at the Smithsonian. My passion for living a life of creativity was finally starting to be fulfilled, but I was still hungry for more. Q: How did Candid Art Kids come to be? A: After having my daughter in 2017, I was gifted a custom baby quilt. This quilt had images of a black woman with natural hair and I knew then that I wanted more baby nursery decor that was customized like this. This led me to start drawing again after 15 years and I couldn’t stop. Once I was content with my designs I decided I wanted to make a quilt! I then debuted them at West Coast craft. A woman stopped by my booth to purchase earrings that same day, she was wearing a Mara Hoffman quilted coat and I knew then that I had to make quilted jackets for kids. So I did and here we are! Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your patterns? A: The African Diaspora and Cosmic Geometry. My love of natural and organic shapes give me the desire to create bold patterns. Q: How has your creative process changed since becoming a mother? A: I started creating my kids line after the birth of my daughter but since she's gotten older, I don't get the freedom of drawing so much in the middle of night because I'm exhausted from the day of keeping up with my little one! I still have creative visions throughout the day, especially in the middle of the night and then I draw them out on my phone. Q: What mamas or brands do you admire in the creative and small business space? A: There are so many that are inspirational brands and mamas but I would say my top 5 that I admire are Misha and Puff, Jabellafleur, Motereta, Raspberry Plum and Myliek. Q: What advice do you have for other mamas looking to set goals and find passions outside of motherhood? A: Try anything! If you ever wanted to take a class, or indulge in an experience just do it, because you never know what idea may arise from that. Also look to your children for the answer. My daughter is the reason I started my brand and your children can ignite creativity and passion that you didn't know you had. Q: What's coming next for Candid Art Kids?? A: Expanding the kids line by adding separates, a mommy and me line that will have matching pieces and a women's line.
