Q: Describe your nursery design style in just 3 words… A: Playful, cozy and mid-century modern (okay, the last one isn’t just one word) Q: How did you incorporate your love of art into your new little one's space? A: Greg and I wanted her nursery to be a calming, special space. We didn’t set out to make it overtly personal but I guess we couldn’t help ourselves. I designed her wallpaper, which is a nod to her middle name (a secret until she’s born!). The large photo above her crib was taken by Greg on our RV trip across America (Saguaro National Park). Greg has gotten REALLY into houseplants in the last six months, so of course he chose to hang the String of Hearts above her window. We want to surround her with beautiful things but we see no reason to collect a bunch of stuff unnecessarily, so we’re trying to keep it simple. Q: If you had to pick one favorite detail or design element, what would it be? A: I love that the space behind her crib contains art from both mom and dad (the wallpaper and the cacti photo). Q: What other designers/IG accounts did you draw inspiration from? A: One challenge I ran into was finding a rug that wouldn’t compete with the wallpaper, but *would* add a pop of color. I looked to Sarah Sherman Samuel to see how she balances color (e.g. how to make the objects in a space punchy but not compete with the rest of the room). I love the nursery she did for her daughter, Clover. I also tend to check in with Emily Henderson’s blog on general design questions I have, like what is the appropriate rug size for a bedroom? Other than that I didn’t do too much searching online because whenever I did, I was so overwhelmed! Too many sources of great inspo! Having the patterned wallpaper was the anchor we worked around.
"The best resource has been other mamas; they’ve assuaged me of my neurotic fears and provided shortcuts on what to do about x, what products we’ll *actually* need, etc."
Q: We have to ask—what's your favorite Tubby Todd product for yourself and what have you stock-piled for mini Simpson? A: I know I should say the Belly Oil right now, but it has to be the AOO (All Over Ointment). I think pregnancy sucks the moisture out of me (is that a thing?). I have a tiny bit of eczema on my wrist, plus my hands get dry so easily, so putting AOO on before bed always has me waking up with silky smooth hands and no flare ups. Baby already has the Newborn Gift Set locked and loaded, so she’ll be covered in Tubby Todd from day one. Q: What are you most looking forward to when it comes to first-time mamahood? A: I mostly daydream about the immediate moments of meeting her and just staring at her. Having her reach for me, reading her books she doesn’t understand, showing her the deer outside the window and seeing Greg be a dad. What color of hair will she have? What will she find funny? It still all feels too good to be true. Once we get past the initial melting into a puddle upon meeting her, I’m excited to experience the world for the first time all over again with her. It’s like showing someone a movie you love that they’ve never seen. You keep looking over at them, curious and delighted by their reactions to your favorite parts. To guide a new human through that is such an honor. Q: What resources have you found the most helpful during your pregnancy? A: The best resource has been other mamas; they’ve assuaged me of my neurotic fears and provided shortcuts on what to do about x, what products we’ll *actually* need, etc. Resources specific to pregnancy: Lily Nichol’s book, Real Food For Pregnancy, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin, the Birthful podcast, and my Full Circle Prenantal Vitamins (I love them!). Not specific to pregnancy but very much applicable to pregnancy: Exercise (I’m partial to the Peloton) and drinking lots of water (pro-tip: Get a big water bottle...for some reason I drink so much more water, and so much faster, with my 27 oz water bottle vs. just drinking out of a cute little 12 oz glass. I love my Bink.) Thanks for sharing this exciting journey with us, Becky! We can't wait to meet Baby Simps SO soon! You've got this, Mama!
