Baby Lotion vs. Baby Eczema Cream Whats the Difference and When to Use Each

Lotion, ointment, balm, cream…what to choose?! Mama, we know that here at Tubby Todd, we have a lot of sensitive skincare options. Which isn’t a bad thing, but the last thing we want to do is overwhelm you. We just want to make sure you have the best choices available! So, when looking for skincare solutions for your baby, do you need lotion? Do you need eczema cream? Cradle Cap Gel? Diaper paste? To bundle, or not to bundle?

Sorry, we said we wouldn’t overwhelm you! But there is just SO much to choose from, which is great when you need options to tackle all kinds of skin sensitivities. That doesn’t mean each product is a one-size-fits-all solution! Not only are we big proponents of having a skincare routine for your little one, but there’s also a difference between the functions of our products. They aren’t necessarily interchangeable, there’s a reason they do what they do!  Like our baby lotion and All Over Ointment eczema cream, both have their time and place.

Our lotion and eczema cream work together in our Regulars Bundle to soothe, moisturize and promote healthy skin. But does it matter which product you use for which situation? Of course it does, Mama! We’ll help you know the difference between our effective Everyday Lotion and powerful All Over Ointment Eczema Treatment, so that you’ll be ready to tackle any sensitive skin situation!

All of our products were not only made with Baby and Mama in mind, but they’re made from experience. Each item serves a purpose that we know is essential when caring for your baby, because at TT, we’ve been through it all! *Studies have shown that baby’s skin is so prone to sensitivity and conditions like dry skin, eczema, and cradle cap because their skin is actually thinner than adults. Which is why your baby’s skin struggles to hold moisture as easily as an adult’s skin does. That’s why Tubby Todd’s lotions and creams are all created with the mission to not only solve your little one’s dry skin issue but promote healthy, hydrated skin without removing moisture (like some products or too frequent washing can do). Now that we’ve been over some of the introductory details, which products should you use on your baby, lotion or eczema cream, and when?

If your child’s skin is slightly dry, and you think maybe they could use something to keep their skin hydrated and moisturized during the day then a lotion would be great. But you know that lotions for babies need to be not only safe and effective but gentle on their delicate skin. Stripping is the last thing we want when babies already have thinner skin layers to begin with. Our Everyday Lotion is exactly what you would use in this situation. You can apply it literally every day, get it? It’s free from SLS, parabens and other ingredients that can irritate the skin and we’re sure you’ll love it with our Worry Free Guarantee, and if you don’t we promise to make things right. You can use it after bath time or to soothe any dryness. Our formula is dermatologist and clinically tested and we’ve seen how effective it is at keeping your child’s skin glowing all day long! With only 1-2 pumps of our lotion, you can start giving your baby the hydrated, happy skin they deserve! Because of how prone to skin irritation babies are, using a lotion to keep their skin hydrated daily is essential. Just like all us adults do!

Now, if that dry skin persists and becomes very red, inflamed, or even scaly with thick patches, that’s when we would recommend an eczema cream (also, of course always consult your little one’s pediatrician if you aren’t sure if their condition is eczema or not!). Whereas the Everyday Lotion can lock in moisturizing ingredients and hydrate the skin, it wasn’t formulated specifically for eczema. All Over Ointment, our super plant-powered premier balm for all sorts of skin conditions, is. Just like our Everyday Lotion, it’s Dermatologist tested, safe for sensitive skin and has our Worry Free Guarantee. Of course, you can use the Everyday Lotion to provide a base layer of moisture before applying the All Over Ointment, which helps AOO do its job. We recommend spot-treating any extra dry or eczema-prone areas with All Over Ointment eczema cream after bath or before bed. And it comes out easily in the wash, so don’t worry about the sheets! With 1% Colloidal Ointment, AOO helps soothe irritated skin and build babe’s moisture barrier.

While our ointment can work wonders, the best way to care for sensitive skin is with a full routine! Don’t forget to use our Hair + Body Wash! Hypoallergenic and gentle, it’s included along with our lotion and ointment in the Regulars Bundle. The TT Hair + Body Wash is fantastic at cleaning and prepping the skin so you can apply the Everyday Lotion, locking in all that good moisture from bathtime. Available in multiple scent varieties, our body wash and shampoo will change bathtime into fun time! And when you need to soothe flare-ups from eczema, rash or other spots of irritation, that’s when you’d apply your new favorite eczema cream, AOO. So, as always, it’s in the routine that all the good skincare work happens! Now you know the difference between our superhero All Over Ointment and soothing Everyday Lotion and when to use them. But if anything is affecting your child’s skin that these products are not fully addressing, it’s important to ask your child’s doctor what might be the cause. Our number 1 goal here at Tubby Todd is giving parents the confidence to care for their little ones’ sensitive skin!
